Program historical
The Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Pharmacology (PPGBF) was founded in 2011 by a group of young researchers who recognized Biochemistry and Pharmacology as an intersection point for establishing the program within the CAPES evaluation area of Biological Sciences II (CBII). In December 2011, PPGBF was approved by CAPES, officially beginning its activities in August 2012.
The program initially comprised two concentration areas: Biochemistry and Pharmacology, with 14 permanent members and 6 collaborators. In 2017, PPGBF underwent a restructuring, during which the Pharmacology area was removed, leaving Biochemistry as its sole concentration area. Most faculty members associated with Pharmacology left, and new professors were recruited. This change was formalized at the university in July 2018, and in 2022, the program was officially renamed the Graduate Program in Biochemistry (PPGBiq), becoming the only Biochemistry graduate program in the state of Espírito Santo.
Currently, PPGBiq has 15 permanent faculty members and 2 collaborators working within the following research lines:
I. Macromolecular Biochemistry: Study of macromolecular structure and function, immunochemistry, and clinical and molecular diagnostics. Bioinformatics.
II. Development of New Materials: Development of novel materials for applications in diagnostic assays, sensors, therapy, and biological material preservation.
III. Experimental Models: Establishment and application of biochemical experimental models to understand the cellular and molecular basis of diseases.
IV. Biochemistry in the Community: Encompasses the program's extension activities aimed at integrating its research with the broader community. These initiatives include projects, courses, lectures, visits, and curatorial activities.
The PPGBiq members has a strong foundational education and a highly multidisciplinary profile, facilitating the in-depth discussion of diverse topics and enabling the rapid development of solutions for global challenges.
Recognizing the importance of university extension as an integrative activity that connects graduate programs with the local community and aiming to contribute more effectively to the dissemination of biochemical knowledge, the program has established "extension activities" as an official research line.
A modern graduate program must also prepare students for the job market, equipping them to think strategically about major scientific challenges and to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams with social responsibility. Therefore, PPGBiq continuously renews its professors, updates its research lines and projects, and fosters partnerships with the private sector to develop applied research initiatives.
As a result of the collective efforts of professors, students, and administrative staff, PPGBiq achieved a higher CAPES evaluation score (4) in the 2017-2020 quadrennial evaluation. Additionally, in 2023, the PhD program in Biochemistry was approved, and started in 2024.
Graduates and enrolled:The program already has 14 masters and counts with 16 students regularly enrolled, being 14 in the masters and 2 in the doctorate.
